While some of you might be sailing down glorious ski runs for these last few days of winter, most of us are chomping at the bit to shed those heavy layers and welcome the joys of spring.
This coming season, there’s a playfulness in the air, and a wonderful cross section of colourful, romantic and spirited trends to help set our style compasses in the right direction.
Let’s start with the idea of sailing our way to sunnier climes with the sporty Nautical trend—something we’ve certainly seen before, but now, with an attitude that’s a little more sophisticated.
Sure stripes are de rigeur for the look: Just think of those classic Breton stripes that Coco Chanel made popular on her seaside holidays back in the ‘20s. But rather than a mere mandatory striped ‘T”, why not try a pair of denim pinstripe jeans? NYDJ has a great, timeless pair that’s pretty irresistible. You might want to team them, or any of the wonderful new spring jeans we’re offering, with a classic, crisp white shirt, or one that has a little tie at the waist, like the one Pink Tartan’s offering.
There’s also a lovely bird pattern from that label, reminiscent of soaring sea gulls, on a navy and ivory bow blouse that’s especially romantic. Also, make sure a little lightweight anorak is on your spring wardrobe list: perfect for a windy boat ride, or a cool cruise down a city sidewalk.
And while they may not exactly be your average deck shoes, you’ll love the slip on sneakers from Clarke’s, especially those in zebra print. But some of the best and most practical nautical accessories around are the assorted neoprene bags from “Save the Bag”, some of which are cross-body, others that are totes, in bright neon shades. It’s sporty playfulness that’s being punched up for spring, so prepare to sail into the season with a little dose of irreverence and a bold new, seaworthy confidence!
