Q: What was your first beauty item?
A: I think my first beauty item was a gift with purchase from Clinique lipstick from my aunty Feigie. It was fire-engine red, and I thought it was just about the most amazing glamourous treasure I could receive. I probably kept it for a lot longer than I should have, and I am not sure I ever even tried it on!
Q: What are some of the best beauty tips you’ve collected over the years as a certified makeup artist?
A: There have been so many tips I have observed in and out of the chair! There should be a focus on one feature (like going for a bold eye, mellow out the lip and vice versa). Another one is to use loose powder to set your makeup. And finally, the biggest tip I have is to try things. Many of us get into a rut of what we think looks good, but as we change, so should our approach to beauty. Besides, you never know, a little experimentation with beauty can lead to a whole new look you never knew you needed!
Q: What’s your current beauty routine?
A: I think the word ‘routine’ is a stretch. Working with TSC and Hello Gorgeous means that I am constantly changing it up and trying different products, which is one of the most unique parts of my job! One aspect of my routine I never skip is wearing sunscreen or wearing something with SPF daily. I wash my face with a gentle cleanser EVERY night, and I use face, eye and neck cream before bed.
Q: What do you love about working with beauty products?
A: I think I love that it’s the combination of science and aesthetics coming together to make people feel good about themselves. Products can play a part in addressing concerns or can help someone feel more beautiful. Now that’s incredible! Not to mention, as someone who loves to learn, the fact that beauty is so full of innovation means there are always new and exciting products and brands to explore!
Q: What’s your favourite part about working on Hello Gorgeous?
A: My favourite part about working on Hello Gorgeous is getting to be the eyes and ears of our shopper. I consider it a privilege to be their trusted host, and I aim to ask all the essential questions on their behalf.
Q: How do you maintain a balance between work life, mom life, and the glam life?
A: Balance is an ever-changing target! Lately, it’s been a lot about knowing what I am doing and trying my best. But I can honestly say a ton of mom life is less than glamorous. The nice thing is that my work life is a lot about style and beauty, so at least I get a good fix at TSC!
Q: What does every cosmetics bag need?
A: Concealer, sheer coverage, mascara, blush and lip gloss. I remember discovering concealer in my early 20s and asking myself: Where have you been all my life?! Sheer coverage is an ideal way to even out any complexion. Mascara is a 10 second way to look like a full night’s sleep was actually on the menu (even if it wasn’t!), and blush and lip gloss give the impression that you are taking good care of yourself (even if you aren’t!).
Q: What are some of your predictions for 2021 Spring beauty trends?
A: I think that 2021 will be about really reflecting on what is vital to a person and making beauty decisions that create self-care moments. It’s also going to be about some interesting contrasts like skinimalism (wearing no-makeup-makeup) and fun, bold looks inspired by the 80s and 90s.
Q: As we shift to doing more self-care at home, what are your suggestions on products and devices worth investing in this year?
A: Invest where it makes sense and focus on your concerns. I think many of us (myself included) try to take on too much, and then everything ends up slipping through the cracks. There is enough on everyone’s plate right now, so I tried to add maybe one or two things you want to work on and drill down on that (and then tune in to my Instagram live beauty show every Monday at 4 pm so we can discuss!).
Q: Do you have tips for staying glam while wearing a face mask?
A: Wearing a face mask is a necessary step at keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe, but by that same token, we all deserve to feel fabulous! My biggest tips: Pick a mask that fits and is comfortable (nothing is less glamorous than fidgeting!), then focus on the eyes with a tremendous heavy-duty mascara, and make sure you work on those brows (they frame the face even when it’s only half of it!).
