Fall Fashion: Animal Kingdom

Fashion lovers beware!  It’s a jungle out there!

Animal prints are back with a vengeance this fall, from snakeskin and zebra to tiger stripes and of course our beloved leopard.  Once considered a tad outré, animal motifs in clothing date back to the 18th century, and have always been associated with luxe exotica.

But they made their way into mainstream fashion in the fun and rebellious ‘60s.  I’ll never forget the attention-getting, faux fur little wrap coat I had as a teenager.  Truth be told, I wish I still had it! It would have been right on trend.

Leopard, which has always been emblematic of physical strength, perseverance and power, beautifully plays up female mystique.  We saw a lot of leopard in the ‘70s and ‘80s, when women began to really find their voice and fashion became beautifully bold.  These days, it continues to be the perfect print for our times! This season, luxuriate in walking on the wild side with a leopard trench coat—Nygard’s got a gorgeous one!

Or try pulling on a pair of leopard pants from Tracy Moore designed by Freda’s.  There’s also a subtle snakeskin print shirt in that collection that could become a ‘go to’ basic.

What’s especially cool is that you don’t have to keep your animal prints in separate style cages this season! Mix them up in irreverent new ways and layer to your heart’s content.  Or team your animal prints with some of the eye-popping winter florals that abound. It all speaks of an edgy elegance guaranteed to make a roaring style statement—one that will undoubtedly get you noticed in fashion’s new zoo.

In the footwear department, snakeskin boots or a little lizard mule loafer will certainly add punch to any look as well, so make sure you check out the offerings from Sam Edelman.  And there’s a chic little leopard sling back that features the perfect little kitten heel you can dress up or down.

Above all, please think of all these animal print offerings as wild and wonderful classics.  Trust me, this is one fabulous trend that’s definitely here to stay.
