4 Ways to Connect Your Home With Amazon Alexa

When it comes to making your life easier, there’s A LOT of things Alexa from Amazon can do. From looking up recipes, providing step-by-step instructions and adding items to your shopping list to listening to music, making phone calls and even keeping track of whose turn it is to empty the dishwasher, there’s a lot to learn.

TSC’s Tech Expert, Renaldo Dwarka explains just how easy it is to get started! “Once you open the box, plug it in and an orange light will come on. Then you’ll need to download the Alexa app on your phone. As soon as you’ve downloaded the app, go into settings and add your device,” Renaldo says. “It then walks you through the set-up instructions – it’s that easy.”

If you’re looking at taking the next step with Alexa and connecting your home in a way that would make the Jetsons jealous, there are a few things you need to know.

Alexa can control other devices, but those devices need to be smart home devices. Renaldo recommends visiting the Skills section of the Alexa app to get a full understanding of everything Alexa can do within your home.  Within the Smart Home Skills section of the app, Alexa will be able to scan and connect with any compatible devices that you have on your network.

According to Renaldo, there are some simple upgrades you can make to get your home connected– here are four things to get you started with your Amazon Echo and Dot!

1. Smart plugs

Smart plugs or sockets can turn any appliance into a smart appliance. Simply plug the socket into the wall, then plug your appliance or device into the socket. It’s highly customizable, allowing you to set times and sync devices to your schedule.

2. Lights

There are starter kits available that allow you to connect and control your lights with your smart device or Alexa. You can control your lights remotely, set timers and schedules and have Alexa turn on a reading light if you are so engrossed in your novel that you don’t want to get up.

3. Wall Switches

A wall switch can easily give you control of several lights – instead of turning one light on, you can have Alexa turn the switch on and eight pot lights connected to that switch will turn on!

4. Thermostat

“Alexa, set the temperature to 25֯.”  With a smart thermostat, you can control the climate in your home through Alexa, whether you’re at home or at work!
