Birthstone of the Month: July Ruby

This July birthstone has been referred to as “the king of precious stones” based on its ancient Sanskrit name, ratnaraj. This gem has long been associated with vibrancy and energy thanks to its deep red hue, which is the result of chromium, an element.

This same element gives the stone fluorescent properties, making it appear to glow from within – an ancient Hindu belief was that rubies burned with fire and could boil water. But the same element that gives rubies their distinct brilliance are also their weakness, as it can easily crack – meaning rubies of traditional size are actually quite rare.

Ruby can also be seen as a symbol of strength and resilience, because it’s the second hardest gemstone after the diamond. It has long been believed that rubies give the wearers courage and luck in love and war. History suggests rubies were traded in China as early as 200 B.C.
